David Diop's award winning novel blends oral story-telling, and day-to-day journalistic account that recreates the horror of life in World War I trenches. The story is told through the journals of a Senegalese soldier, Alfa Ndiaye, who was recruited to fight alongside the French army during World War I. When his friend, Matemba Diop, is seriously injured and begs him to spare him the pain of a long agonizing death in No Man's Land, Alfa Ndiaye is unable to commit the mercy killing and wrestles a descend into madness as he hatches out a plan to revenge his friend's death. Limited to 15 participants.
