Join us for a discussion of Gyasi's 2016 award winning debut novel in celebration of Black History month. Copies of the novel will be available one month in advance at the Circulation desk.
Homegoing by Ghanaian-American author Yaa Gyasi traces the descendants of two half-sisters, Effia and Esi, born in two different villages in 18th century Ghana. The sisters' lives follow different paths: Effia marries a wealthy Englishman and lives in Cape Coast Castle, while Esi is captured during a raid and sold into slavery. The novel follows the parallel narrative lines of these sisters' descendants through eight generations, from the Gold Coast to the plantations in Mississippi, from the American Civil War to Jazz Age Harlem. Gyasi's novel is an intimate portrayal of the African and African-American experience in the aftermath of enslavement. Limited to 15 participants.
