Julia Alvarez's novel Afterlife, published in 2020, tells the story of Antonia, a retired English professor who tries to reassess her life and tackle unexpected challenges when her husband dies suddenly. The story unfolds in a small town in Vermont, where Antonia finds herself pulled in the middle of unexpected events while she is already dealing with the sudden loss of her husband. One day she returns home to find a pregnant undocumented immigrant teenager at her doorstep, while she also discovers that one of her sisters is missing. The novel in its compact yet layered narrative explores themes of loss, resilience, identity, sisterhood, and immigration.
