The Art of Rebellion
Propaganda and the Press in 1776
Saturday, June 20

Reed Memorial Library
Jenkins RoomJoin us for a visual exploration of 18th-century "social media."
Join us as we go behind the scenes of the "War of Words" by analyzing the graphic design, viral pamphlets, and bold propaganda used by Revolution-era Americans to ignite a nation.
Before the first shot was fired, the American Revolution was fought on paper. Using a history major’s perspective and a designer’s eye, we’ll deconstruct iconic works like Paul Revere’s Boston Massacre engraving and Thomas Paine’s Common Sense. We’ll examine the tactical use of pseudonyms (like John Adams’ "Novanglus"), the impact of 18th-century typography, and how these early "influencers" used the printing press to turn a local dispute into a global movement. Perfect for history buffs, designers, and anyone interested in the power of the written word.
