Adunni manages to flee to Lagos where she becomes a maid, facing further exploitation, while persistently striving to find her own voice and speak up against the injustices she experiences, particularly the oppression of women in her society. Abi Daré's novel has been praised for its realistic depiction of sexism, poverty in Nigeria, child labor and child marriage in Nigeria and received critical acclaim.
