Join us for a discussion of award winning Cypriot author Christy Lefteri's 2019 novel Songbirds. Copies of the book will be available one month in advance at the Circulation Desk.
Christy Lefteri's 2019 novel Songbirds tells a gripping story inspired by real life events, the disappearance of domestic workers on the island of Cyprus. Nisha, a domestic worker from Sri Lanka, disappears one day much to the dismay and distress of Petra, the wealthy widow who employs her as a nanny for her ten year-old daughter Aliki, and Petros, Nisha's lover and friend. When the police refuses to cooperate with Nisha's disappearance, Petra takes on the investigation on her own, a path that leads her to other immigrant domestic workers, friends of Nisha, who like Nisha had to make choices of necessity that render them vulnerable and powerless. Lefteri's beautifully crafted novel offers an empathetic narrative that gives voice to the invisible and often misunderstood lives of immigrants. Limited to 15 people.
